I chose Southeastern Institute to further my career in the medical field. I had lost my job and wanted to be able to look back in life and say I accomplished my goal of giving back to those in need. My instructors were very helpful throughout my journey at Southeastern Institute. Mrs. Velkovich, Mrs. Booker, and Ms. Jordan always looked out for my well-being in school and life. I am truly blessed to have people I look up to because they make me laugh, they are caring, and love their students.

I can remember a time when faced with the obstacle of preparing for my Phlebotomy certification. I thought I could not do it, but Mrs. Velkovich and Mrs. Booker took the time and made sure I would succeed because they saw greatness in me. I have gained a lot more knowledge in the medical field that I did not know prior to coming to Southeastern Institute. I have also managed to communicate better. The one thing I can take away from Southeastern Institute is that not only does attendance matter, but also speaking clearly is the key to communication.

I am now working as a Medical Assistant for Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas Healthcare System) at Levine Cancer Institute in the oncology department.

"I heard about Southeastern Institute from a friend. When I first made an appointment I was not sure what I wanted to do, but after my first visit to the campus and meeting with Cindy in Admissions, I knew that I had to enroll for Medical Assisting right away!"

I heard about Southeastern Institute from a friend. When I first made an appointment I was not sure what I wanted to do, but after my first visit to the campus and meeting with Cindy in Admissions, I knew that I had to enroll for Medical Assisting right away!

All of my Medical Assisting instructors were amazing. Mrs. Booker was extremely helpful. She was tough and made us go the extra mile, but it helped me learn in every other class along the way. Mrs. Branch helped the process for check-offs prior to externship go smoothly. She helped the process be less stressful. You can definitely tell that Mrs. Daniels loves what she does. She is down to Earth and has a great personality. And of course Ms. Doerflinger – I can personally say she has the hardest job. She really helped me find an externship site and continued to support me throughout my two months in my clinical rotation. Externship was the hardest portion of the program, but Ms. D helped me get through it.

All of the staff at Southeastern Institute made me feel welcome and encouraged me throughout my entire program. I would not be a Registered Medical Assistant if it wasn’t for Southeastern Institute. The school helped prepare me for everything I do in my field now. Behind everything, education does come first. Southeastern Institute prepared me with all of the background information and knowledge required in my workplace.

I was hired directly from my externship with Carolinas Healthcare System as a Registered Medical Assistant. I work in the main surgery center in downtown Charlotte. I am excited to train to work with a new virtual platform for patients as well.

I was working in retail and feeling bored with my situation when I first heard about Medical Billing and Coding. I decided to do research online and found Southeastern Institute. My Admissions Coordinator, Destiny Brown, helped me enroll by guiding me through the financial aid process, touring campus, and encouraging me.

My instructors at Southeastern Institute made my transition in going back to school very successful. They were intelligent, nice, and I loved having them as my instructors. Southeastern Institute has been so wonderful for me. The staff and instructors are awesome. This school has helped me grow as a person. I loved learning about Medical Billing and Coding. I also met some wonderful friends as well.

I graduated from the Medical Billing and Coding program as a Certified Billing and Coding Specialist. Today, I work as a Benefits Verification Specialist with the Lash Group.

Jamelle McKenzie, Pharmacy Technician

Valedictorian, August 2013

When I first came to Southeastern Institute I was just a regular Joe working to maintain my lifestyle and bills. Today I can say that I am successfully working as a Pharmacy Technician in Harris Teeter Pharmacy. I was part of the first class to graduate from the Pharmacy Technician program at Southeastern Institute – Charlotte and the Valedictorian for the graduating class of August 2013. I was ranked the highest out of all of my fellow graduating classmates; I had perfect attendance, and a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Thank you to my Admissions Coordinator, Kristin Baker, if it was not for her I would not even have come to school. She always encouraged me to come and enroll to take the first step into my new career. I owe a big thank you to my instructor, Ms. Stokely. She taught me everything I needed to know to become a successful Pharmacy Technician. She always pushed me and said “you got this”, even when I didn’t think I did. Southeastern Institute changed my life and got me on a positive road. I am grateful for all of the staff and faculty at Southeastern Institute. There was always a welcoming feeling coming into the school every single morning, and it reminded me that I was in the right place doing the right thing. Thank you Southeastern Institute for helping me continue to shape the individual that I have become and am still becoming.

Remember, don’t forget to represent the individual that you are and most importantly, don’t forget that “individuality” is the key to success!

When I first came to Southeastern Institute, I was at a crossroads in my life. I was tired of working at my job and needed a change. I decided to enroll in the Electronic Medical Billing and Coding Specialist program.

My Program Coordinator and instructor, Mrs. Osmin Smalls, helped me so much throughout my program. She was always encouraging us to be our “brand”. She would show us motivational videos to help us throughout the day if we were feeling down about school. I would also say all of the staff and faculty involved with the Student Ambassador Program hold a special place in my educational history. I was nominated as a Student Ambassador and it helped me overcome my shyness. I still have a long way to go but when it was my day to greet the students I didn’t feel apprehensive when speaking with other people. I actually enjoyed it and looked forward to seeing and greeting the other students.

Southeastern Institute has made me realize my potential and what I want to do with my life. If it wasn’t for my experience at Southeastern I wouldn’t have gotten the courage to go back to school finish my Bachelor’s Degree. I was hired as a Medical Biller with my externship site, Dynamic Health and Pain Management.

During my program, I earned a Perfect 4.0 GPA, Perfect Attendance, completed the Leadership Distinction Program, and participated in the Student Ambassador Program. I was awarded Valedictorian for our 2017/2018 graduating class! Thank you Southeastern Institute!

As a little girl, I always dreamed of being a Nurse. When I came to Southeastern College, I felt a bit apprehensive about enrolling in an accelerated nursing program since I had no medical background, except for the knowledge I obtained in the Nursing Assistant course in High School. All I knew was that I wanted to be a Nurse and was willing to put forth all my effort to achieve my goal.

I would like to highlight Mrs. Sierra, she holds a special place in my educational history and still has a huge influence in my life on a personal and professional level. During my year of nursing school, there were times I felt a lack of support and had doubts that I would ever be a nurse but Mrs. Sierra gave me the motivation, the courage and the strength to push forward and never give up on my dreams. It was not easy and I had some setbacks in school but she saw the potential in me and was my cheerleader.

If it wasn’t for Southeastern College and my professors, I probably wouldn’t be the Nurse I am today. The clinical rotations during my education gave me the knowledge and prepared me for what was to come. Today, I have the confidence to hold a dying patients hand, run towards a life-threatening emergency and do everything possible to save my patients life. Not only did Southeastern College provide me with the skills necessary to succeed as a nurse they also provided me the confidence that I needed to pursue my dreams.

Four years into my nursing career, I am now pursing my BSN, work full-time as a Cardiac Nurse in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and am part of the Emergency Response Team at Memorial Hospital.

We struggled to keep afloat and I survived a medical condition that I was diagnosed with halfway through the program but quitting was never an option. If I had made it this far nothing would stop me now. Southeastern College holds a very special place in my heart. The continued support I received from my professor, Mrs. De La Vega and the dedication from Mrs. Carlos in the Student Services department played a major part in my success. I learned everything I needed to know to be a successful Medical Assistant and was hired from my externship site. My starting salary was far more than I hoped for! Thank you Southeastern!

I passed I’m a Registered Nurse! When I started Southeastern College I was a single mom, working full-time with two school aged kids. Three months later I was laid off from my job and recalled as a per diem employee. My only support was my mother, a retired nurse who suffers with arthritis. She did whatever it took to make sure my kids were taken care of while I was in school. I had to repeat my first course and I lost all hope. My instructors were very encouraging and kept in touch with me to make sure I didn’t give up on my dream. I took a year off from school, got married to a very supportive man and returned to Southeastern College. I am grateful for the RN Bridge Program. The staff was very helpful and they were determined to keep us on track.

Southeastern College changed my life. When I started the LPN program in 2012 I was a shy, insecure woman filled with so many fears, but I put my trust in the faculty. I believed that if I did what was asked of me, I would succeed. And I did! Later, I returned and enrolled in the Registered Nurse program. I choose Southeastern College because they always made me feel cared for and that I mattered not just as a student but as a person. Today, I am a confident Registered Nurse who sees herself with positive attributes. The instructors provided me with the knowledge to pass the RN-NCLEX exam as well as the discipline to obtain a successful career in nursing. For that my family and I thank will always be thankful.

My journey at Southeastern College was a long and tough one but I made it. The nursing program requires that you devote a lot of time to study time. Something, which was scarce for me.  I worked full-time, went to school full-time student and had two young children who depended on me. In the midst of it, my husband suffered a work injury, which required him to have back surgery. Through it all, I had the support of the instructors at Southeastern College who assisted me with tutoring when I needed it. I spent long hours at the school library on Saturday and prepared myself to be the best nurse I can be. Soon after I passed my NCLEX I attend a job fair at Broward Health. Of 32 candidates, I was the chosen one. Today, I have the job of my dreams. I am proof that you can achieve anything you set your mind to regardless of the obstacles life may throw at you.

"I’ll be forever grateful for my experience at Southeastern College and I’d gladly do it all over again."

The best word to describe my experience at Southeastern College was life changing. Having that little piece of paper showing that I am a Certified MA has opened up so many doors for me. Who would have thought in just one short year I’d go from making 9/hr, penny pinching and extreme couponing to living in comfortably making 16.25/hr. I no longer have to chose what bill to pay for the month and what bill I’d have to put off for another.

I’m now working a job I can be proud of and I get to learn new things each day. I’ll be forever grateful for my experience at Southeastern College and I’d gladly do it all over again.

After many years of contemplation and a major life change later I decided to go back to school, Southeastern College to be exact. I enrolled in Southeastern College to pursue a career as a medical assistant. The very thought of going back to school was very intimidating, especially being that I am 50 years old and never enjoyed school. Taking all of this in consideration, my first day was nerve-racking and terrifying. As I settled in I met my professor and classmates who helped to ease my nerves and anxieties. Mr. Dickens, in particular, was very kind, patient, and understanding towards his students. He would go out of his way to make sure I understood the material and did not treat me any different just because of my age. He was understanding to all of his students no matter who they were. Mr. Dickens just wanted to teach his students and see them excel. Throughout the class I had to overcome my anxieties of oral presentations and Mr. Dickens was there way more than I ever expected him to be. He was patient and helped me overcome this fear until I was comfortable with presenting in front of the class.  He went out of his way to make sure all of his students excel.

Even after graduating he provided me with mock tests and guidance to ensure I get my certification. Thanks to the guidance of Mr. Dickens was able to achieve my goal of being a certified licensed medical assistant. Because of his intelligence and passion to help others I was able to achieve my goals and create a better future with my new skill and I look forward to seeing what the future holds in my new career.

This is a letter of testimony for Southeastern College, first I would like to say that Southeastern College has a faculty that is dedicated from the time of open enrollment that follows you to the time of your graduation.

As a single mother, when I first enrolled into this school I wasn’t sure how I was going to accomplish my career path as a future Medical Assistant but Southeastern College made that possible for me.

Due to their flexible and convenient class schedules I was able to balance life at home with a baby and a career path. I’am a two time graduate at Southeastern College and the second best thing that made my career path possible was my professor Mr. Brian Dickens. Mr.Dickens made coming to class dream! He motivates you and provides you with the most updated information on your chosen career path. The second best part of Mr.Dickens is that he is accessible even after you graduate just like Southeastern College is.Their placement assistance for internship or possible employment is amazing! They attend to your needs when it comes time for placement, making sure you have your best foot forward and thanks to them I was able to do my internship and land a job at Tenet Florida Physicians Services.

Southeastern College I thank you and because your school is so amazing, I now have a brighter future for me and my son, It was a pleasure.

"Hosting as an externship site x 5 year now for SEC, gives the Medical Assistant a chance to help assist the Externs to understand what it means to work as a team, which builds the soft skills component of the role."

Externs are very helpful because they help assist the Medical offices when busy.  They are trained and in both clinical and administrative aspects of healthcare and can work on a # of projects crucial to the delivery of healthcare and patient needs. Hosting as an externship site x 5 year now for SEC, gives the Medical Assistant a chance to help assist the Externs to understand what it means to work as a team, which builds the soft skills component of the role.

Our team of 19 doctors are very receptive of the help and it gives them a chance to educate the externs if they are not doing something correctly.  Externship is also GREAT opportunity for employment options as well because it allows us to identify the strengths and weaknesses and to mold them into an ideal employee of MCCI.

For over a year Premier has continuously accepted the students from Southeastern College to extern in our facility. We look at this as a huge opportunity to grow new and upcoming potential as well as provide the Premier team with training and leadership skills.

Our practice is PCMH certified and part of the Palm Beach ACO. Therefore, documentation on the medical staff’s end is crucial, extremely detailed and tedious at times. The knowledge and experience the students receive here at Premier is priceless and valuable. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to coach, mentor and develop these upcoming students.
